Indonesia: Diversifying Auto Production
Indonesia’s automakers are investing heavily in increasing and diversifying production to keep pace with rising demand in what is now South-East Asia’s largest vehicle market. Last year, Indonesia overtook Thailand to achieve the highest vehicle sales among ASEAN member states. More than 894,000 units were sold, according to Jongkie D. Sugiarto, the first deputy chairman of the Association of KADIN Indonesia. The medium-term outlook for the industry is excellent – sales are forecast to reach 1.2 million units in 2016, according to HIS Automotive, an alaysis and consulting company focusing on the sector.

Rising demand is expected to have seen consumer electronics sales in Indonesia reach IDR 28 trillion (USD 3.1 billion) in 2011, according to the country's producers association. While the figure underlines healthy growth in the sector, industry leaders say improved incentives and better infrastructure could lead to faster progress.
The estimate from the Electronic Producers Association (Gabel), given late last year, is a 7.25% rise in its initial predictions for sales in 2011 that it says is due to increased consumer interest. Sales of electronics, including television sets, refrigerators and washing machines, were valued at IDR 21.6 trillion (USD 2.4 billion) in the first nine months of 2011, Gabel’s chairman, Ali Soebroto Oentaryo, told local media.
